Land Rig Transport System

Trailers

SeaMax Corporation was awarded the contract to design 6 unique customized trailers for the transport of 6 drilling rig modules.  A minimum ground clearance, overall cargo height and axle load limits were established by client. Each unit was designed with appropriate loading/unloading mechanisms for rig-up operations. The design was performed in accordance with industry standards as stated below:

  • AISC 9th Edition – American Institute of Steel Construction (1989)
  • ASME – American Society of Mechanical Engineers
  • ABS PART 3: HULL CONSTRUCTION AND EQUIPMENT – American Bureau of Shipping.
  • TXDMV

3D Modeling

A complete set of 3D models and fabrication drawings were generated for each unit using “Solidworks”.

Global Structural Analysis

A 3D model was built using the “SAP2000 – structural analysis program. The models covered the custom trailer frames and hydraulic slider beams only. The global analysis is governed by the “American Institute for Steel Construction” which is in-built in the code check feature of SAP2000.

Finite Element Analysis

A finite element analysis was also used to check component parts for local effects such as fatigue, bolt pretension and peak stresses.

Serviceability Limit

The design performed also took service conditions into cognizance by distributing loads evenly amongst axles in keeping with Texas Department of Transportation. Deflection control was also implemented.
